The Kings of Comedy: Steve Martin and Martin Short

Author KevinKevin, June 10th, 2024

It is rare for two comedy legends to find a perfect counterpart in each other

But Grammy Award winner Steve Martin and Tony Award winner Martin Short have done so with ease, creating a duo that continues to tickle audiences decades later. Their partnership began several years ago on the set of the 1986 film Three Amigos, and they have since established themselves as a delightful double act, touring together since 2015 and starring in various productions together.

A Friendship Forged in Comedy

Their friendship first blossomed during the filming of Three Amigos, a comedy where Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Chevy Chase portrayed out-of-work actors who accidentally become heroes. The film featured an unforgettable duet, "My Little Buttercup," which showcased Martin and Short's on-screen chemistry and off-screen friendship hitting new heights.

For Gen X, they're the unforgettable trio from Three Amigos. Millennials know them as the duo from the Father of the Bride franchise, with Martin as the uptight father and Short as the flamboyant wedding planner.

Alternatively, Gen Z may know them from Only Murders in the Building, where they, along with co-star Selena Gomez, play true-crime enthusiasts unraveling a murder mystery in their upscale Manhattan apartment complex. They may also recognize them from their joint Netflix special, An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life. In this stand-up show, the longtime friends and entertainment legends share a variety of jokes, memorable songs, and amusing anecdotes from their careers in comedy.

While they are trendsetters in the comedy world, they also know how to keep up with modern audiences, maintaining an ever-changing dynamic that has allowed them to appeal to multiple generations.

About Steve Martin

From his early days as a standup comedian with rock-star success in the 70s to his diverse film roles in comedies like The Jerk and Parenthood, Martin has continually reinvented himself. He's also known as a novelist, composer, and banjo virtuoso, with an art collection rivaling many museums. His multifaceted talents have shaped a career that defies categorization.

About Martin Short

Martin Short has carved out his niche in Hollywood with a career marked by memorable roles in films like Innerspace and TV series such as The Morning Show. Despite a childhood that involved the loss of his parents and eldest brother before he turned 20, Short has channeled his experiences into his craft, bringing vulnerability to his comedic roles. His sociable nature and comedic genius have made him a beloved figure in Hollywood.
